Bookbinding method

Bookbinding is a timeless craft that has evolved over centuries, blending artistry and functionality to create beautiful, durable books. From ancient manuscripts to modern novels, bookbinding plays a crucial role in preserving written works and enhancing their aesthetic appeal. We present to your attention our binding method. 

Materials for the book block:

  1.  Letter-size paper, 25 sheets; 1 sheet separate
  2.  Strong thread
  3.  Needle
  4.  Awl
  5.  Ruler
  6.  Pencil
  7.  Knife
  8.  Scissors
  9.  Bone folder*
  10.  PVA glue
  11.  Brush
  12.  Sponge
  13.  Glossy ledger-size paper for the book cover
  14.  Thick letter-size paper, 2 sheets
  15. Thick cardboard; 5.5x8.5 in  — 23 pieces, 0.4x8.5 in —1 piece
  16.  Clamps

*or any flat, solid object

Steps: Preparing the Block

Let’s start making bookbinding, first steps:
1.
Fold the sheets of paper in half, smoothing each fold with a bone folder or any flat, solid object.

2. Gather the sheets into notebooks: 1 notebook consists of 5 sheets. We are trying to create a 100-page block.

3. Make a template with the following pencil marks: 5 dots at a distance of 1.1 in from the edge and from each other in the middle of the sheet.

4. Apply the template to the open notebooks.

5. Make holes according to your markings.

6. We end up with 5 notebooks with the same holes on the fold line. Gather them so that the holes align.

Bookbinding | Sewing a Block

1.Sew the first notebook to the second. Pass the thread through the bottom hole of the notebook from the outside and bring it back through the top. Attach the end of the thread to the table with tape so that it does not come loose.

2. Place the second notebook on top of the first so that the holes of the notebooks match. Thread the needle into the second notebook.

3. Pull the thread out through the second hole.

4. Thread the needle into the second hole of the first notebook.

5. Inside the first notebook, grab the thread that runs lengthwise and bring the needle out through the same hole.

6. Insert the needle into the second hole of the second notebook.

7. Pull the thread through the third hole.

8. Thread the needle into the third hole of the first notebook, again taking the thread that runs lengthwise and pulling the needle through.

9. Now, we’ve sewn the first and second notebooks. Tie the end of the thread from the first notebook into a knot with the main piece of thread.

10. Sew the remaining notebooks in another way. Pass the needle in the third notebook through the last hole and pull it out through a neighboring one.

11. Pull the thread into the intervening stitch between the first and second notebooks.

12. Thread the needle into the same hole in the third notebook.

13. Bring the thread through the adjacent hole.

14. In this way, sew the remaining notebooks.

15. Spread PVA glue on the stitches. The binding is almost ready!

16. Fix the block with large clamps and cardboard. Let the glue dry.

Bookbinding | Gluing the Endpaper

1.Fold the thick paper in half and smooth the fold with a bone folder.

2. Distribute the glue with a brush 0.4 in from the spine of the block.

3. Glue the pastedown. Repeat on the other side of the block.

4. Fix the block with clamps and cardboard. Let the glue dry.

BookBinding Time

1.Draw pencil marks on the back of the cover to mark the cover and binding.

2. Spread PVA glue on the cardboard for the spine and glue it to the sheet, taking into account the pencil marks that you drew.

3. Glue the cardboard sides in the same way.

4. Glue the areas for the bend to the inside of the cardboard.
